We take a closer look at the history of one of the furniture world's greatest innovations.
In 1968, furniture architect Jørgen Rasmussen MAA designed the well-known KEVI double wheel as part of the new KEVI office chair. The wheel quickly became world-famous and has since been further developed into a wide range of different types of wheels. This was the start of the KEVI company, which became a recognized manufacturer of the well-known KEVI office chairs and castors. Over the years, the KEVI double-wheeled furniture castor has won several design awards, including the ID Classic Award in 1998. In the 1970s, the double-wheel castors were further developed with a locking function, and through the 1980s, new castors with soft wheels were introduced for use on e.g. wooden floors. During the same period, anti-static castors made of aluminum and zinc were also introduced to avoid static electricity when used on carpets.
After the sale of KEVI in 1988, the production of the well-known KEVI wheels was transferred to ScanCastor A/S. The increasing demand for double-wheeled furniture castors for office chairs, but also many other types of furniture, led to the further development of several other castor models. In the 1990s, ScanCastor developed a wheel that was the only one in the world that could be completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. It was particularly sought after by laboratories, hospitals and hairdressers. During this period, wheel speed was also looked at and a wheel was developed that ran easier under load. That way, the chair is not pushed away when you stand up. Different variants of this feature have been developed so that today we can offer a very wide range of Danish-designed office wheels.
Through continuous development of the dual wheels, ScanCastor has managed to keep the original wheels on the market despite tough competition from inferior copies. That's why a large part of our products are now sold worldwide either as direct exports or produced under license agreements. ScanCastor is still the only manufacturer of the original KEVI double-wheel furniture castor worldwide.
